How the World Test Championship Works

Series, points percentage, penalties and the route to the final—without the jargon.

A championship built from series

The ICC World Test Championship turns selected bilateral Test series into a league cycle. Participating teams play different opponents across home and away series, and results count toward a championship table before the leading teams meet in a final.

Why percentage matters

Because teams do not all play the same number of matches, standings use a percentage of points available rather than only a raw total. A win, draw or tie contributes according to the current competition rules, while a loss does not add result points.

Penalties can change the table

Teams can lose championship points for slow over rates or other rule breaches. That means a match result alone may not explain the standings. Check the ICC table and disciplinary announcements rather than relying on an old screenshot.

Follow the current cycle

Fixtures, qualification scenarios and playing conditions are tied to a particular cycle. When assessing Pakistan’s path, note remaining opponents, home and away conditions, points percentage and any confirmed penalties. Scenario calculations are provisional until results are official.
